It’s called the Gadsden Flag, named for Christopher Gadsden, a colonel who presented it to Congress back in 1775. The snake wasn’t picked by accident. Benjamin Franklin had already used a cut up rattlesnake years earlier to make a point about the colonies needing to stick together, since a rattlesnake never strikes without warning first.
